Little J & Big Cuz, the first animated kids show to feature Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their culture, has been declared Best Children’s Television Program at the 2017 SAE ATOM Awards.

Held by the Australian Teachers of Media since 1982, the ATOM Awards celebrate the best of Australian and New Zealand content from the education sector and screen industry professionals across 33 categories.

The 2017 SAE ATOM Award winners were announced on Thursday 30 December. Little J & Big Cuz was also a finalist in the Best Indigenous Video or Website, Best Educational App or eBook and Best Educational Game categories.

Created for children aged four to six years, Little J & Big Cuz aims to support the successful transition from home to school of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children as well as help create ‘ready schools’, following a two-way learning model and focusing on the children’s strengths. Importantly, Little J & Big Cuz works towards demystifying Indigenous culture for non-Indigenous children, just as much as it demystifies schools for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids.

Little J & Big Cuz is a joint project of the Australian Council for Educational Research, Ned Lander Media, NITV, Screen Australia, Film Victoria, Screen Tasmania, the Australian Children’s Television Foundation and SNAICC – National Voice for our Children. Creative studio Deeper Richer designed and built the Little J & Big Cuz games and app.

The Little J & Big Cuz Season 1 DVD is available from the ACER Shop or visit the Little J & Big Cuz website to watch, play and learn.
