New Year, New Goals: How To Achieve Your Career Goals
ACER news 4 Jan 2019 3 minute readHave you set yourself a career goal for the New Year? January is the perfect time to step back and renew your focus on where you want to be, career-wise.
Statistics show that only 9.2% of people ever achieve their New Year's resolutions. That’s fewer than one in ten of us.
So how can you make sure you don’t fall at the first hurdle but go on to accomplish your career goals in the coming year?
Start by working out what motivates you.
You'll need to find a sustainable source of motivation if you want to accomplish your New Year career goal.
Do you feel a great sense of accomplishment after tackling a huge feat? You’re motivated by a challenge. For the best chances of success, identify a goal that will let you take risks and think creatively.
Do you feel most invigorated when you’re learning? Your motivation is the opportunity for growth. Look for ways to develop your skills and knowledge through professional development.
Do you experience a sense of happiness and meaning when you are improving the lives of others? You're motivated by making a difference. Set a career goal that will make a positive impact on the people around you, whether that’s your students, peers or the entire school. For example, you could set a goal to become a leader in assessment and make an immediate impact on your students’ learning. (This article tells you how.)
Work backwards from your end goal.
Once you have your end goal, work backwards and list the steps that will lead you there. For example, if you’ve set a goal to become a leader in assessment, the steps you’ll need to take are:
- Research the course that will give you the required skills
- Find out the eligibility requirements
- Work out how you will fit study around life and work
- Talk to your employer and gain their support
- Enrol!
Breaking your big goal into small, actionable steps will make it less overwhelming and more achievable.
Strategise for success
What might stop you from achieving your career goal? Think about the potential obstacles that might hold you back and work out ways to overcome them.
For instance, maybe you want to study to gain expertise in assessment or teaching but are worried you won’t be able to find the time to study. A good strategy would be to choose a part-time online course that gives you the flexibility to study your way. Talk to your friends and family to work out ways they can support you. Approach your employer too – you might be surprised at the help they offer.
