Putting creative thinking at the core of the English school curriculum

ACER news 3 minute read

ACER UK and Rethinking Assessment have launched an exploratory study looking at the feasibility and benefits of integrating creative thinking into the English national curriculum.

The ACER UK and Rethinking Assessment research teams have crafted a pioneering assessment framework for creative thinking, collaborating closely with an Academic Advisory Group composed of global experts. This innovative project involved the recruitment of schools and the provision of comprehensive support for participating teachers through a series of online Continuing Professional Development and Learning (CPDL) sessions.

These sessions served a dual purpose:

  • firstly, to equip teachers with the skills to integrate the language model from the assessment framework into their curriculum planning, thereby fostering creative thinking among students
  • secondly to guide teachers in employing 3 distinct assessment methods – teacher assessment, student self-report, and portfolio – to document and validate the impact of creative thinking initiatives in their classrooms.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in embedding creative thinking into educational practices and effectively measuring its outcomes.
